It’s a full hour of NWA news to kick off the show this week!

From there we move into the weekend of August 12, 1989 and dissect all 5 episodes of NWA TV for the weekend featuring the Doc vs. Rotunda Scientific Challenge Series, Muta vs. Gilbert in a NO DQ Match, Johnny Ace suffers an injury, and the production issues continue to cause mass confusion!

More on the Skyscrapers/Mike Blackwell Shoot Situation (00:01:12)
We look more in-depth at the infamous SkyScrapers vs. Mike Blackwell/Avalanche match from last week’s episode. Just who was Mike Blackwell? Listen to this episode to find out!

Special thanks to @TheJimCornette on Twitter for chiming in and adding a little insight on the situation and what went on backstage after the mayhem in the ring. Also, a special thanks to the Hannibal Channel on Youtube for an excerpt of a Dan Spivey shoot interview discussing the fallout. It wasn’t disappointing!

Missy Hyatt Talks The Great Muta, Eddie Gilbert, and Politics in the NWA (00:05:29)
Special thanks once again to @MissyHyatt on Twitter as she talks being misted TWICE by the Great Muta, the abrupt ending to the Muta/Eddie Gilbert feud, and reuniting with Muta nearly 30 years later and receiving a special gift. Was she misted a THIRD TIME? From there, Missy also talks Politics within the NWA, Eddie Gilbert being demoted both on and off-screen, and Missy herself being removed from TV for “gaining too much weight”. GET REAL NWA!

Missy is truly underappreciated for her knowledge and memory of this time period in the business and doesn’t get nearly enough respect.

NWA VIP Jobber of the Month (00:18:08)
This week we take a look at the NWA’s July ’89 VIP JOBBER OF THE MONTH. Any guesses as to who walked away with this title… AGAIN???

We also discuss the miserable time the boys of the NWA had working with what appeared to be (at times) some of the untrained or half-trained job guys throughout the Louisiana and Texas Tapings.

NWA Pro Results for 8/5/89 (00:27:23)
We couldn’t find the footage in time for last week’s episode of the Grenade, but we did find detailed results of the program, and we share those with you this week. Featuring Match #1 in the Dr. Death vs. Rotunda Scientific Series.

The Omni Bash Revisited (00:31:14)
As promised, Ray did some research and came up with some better answers for some of the unanswered questions last week in regards to the final night of the 1989 Bash Tour that culminated at the Omni. What was the legit figure in regards to crowd attendance? Why did Sting miss the TV Title Match with the Great Muta? We follow up on last week’s questions right here!

There’s a NEW BOOKER in Town. WOOOO! (00:35:32)
With record-low TV Ratings and attendance at the house shows un the toilet, in steps the Nature Boy as the “Ultimate Decision Maker” as far as creative goes. Hear the story of just how Ric Flair came to be booker.

Talent Comings and Goings (00:43:16)
There’s even more new talent headed into the promotion, a few on their way out, and a new Iron Sheik-led faction in town that just may rival the Four Horsemen…. Or not! We talk negations, tryouts, who got hired, who didn’t, and the demise of the Ding Dongs… We have a lot of fun here talking Ron Simmons keeping it real, Iron Sheik impressions, John Nord’s interpretation of the business, the masked Mr. Z, Kamala II, and Dick Slater as Terry Funk V2.0.

After realizing how deep we were into the show, Ray calls an audible and elects to cover just one week of NWA TV this week for the sake of quality over quantity!

And with the Power Hour on Saturday Night this week, we kick things off with…

 NWA Pro 8/12/89 (01:02:45)
It’s Match #2 in the Scientific Series between Dr. Death & Mike Rotunda. Can the Doc tie things up at 1 fall a piece? Flyin’ Brian takes on Norman the Lunatic, a match in which Pillman may win the battle but not necessarily the war. The New Zealand Militia mean business as they take on the Dynamic Dudes and break the cheekbone of Johnny Ace! Fun squashes with the Roadies and the Great Muta. The Steiners face Ron Simmons & The Bounty Hunter. Lex Luger is NUMERO UNO BABY! We discuss at length the production issues going on right now in the NWA. Plus, the Iron Sheik has some word for co-host Steve at (01:13:38).

NWA Worldwide 8/12/89 (01:31:52)
In an angle that sets up the main event, The Freebirds show Rick Steiner what Brotherhood is all about. Then, later in the program, it’s the Steiner Brothers vs. World Champions The Freebirds in non-title action. Squashes with Norman and the Roadies. Tommy Rich teams with Flyin’ Brian to take on Ron Simmons & Cruel Connection. Plus, we hear briefly from “The Iron Sheik” again.

NWA World Championship Wrestling 8/12/89 (01:58:04)
It’s our first 2-HOUR edition of WCW in quite a while! It’s Dr. Death vs. Mike Rotunda in a match in the middle of the Scientific Series… that isn’t part of the scientific series??!?!? We get out very first Flyin’ Brian Promo as he challenges Norman to a rematch, how will Teddy Long respond? Sid Vicious sends “Chopper” Steve Casey out of the NWA. The Danger Zone with guest Capt. Mike Rotunda. In-ring action with Ron Simmons, Brian Pillman, the Midnight Express, World Champion Freebirds, Ranger Ross, Tommy Rich, the New Zealand Militia, and the Steiner Brothers. Promos galore with the likes of Lex Luger, Sting, Ric Flair, the Roadies, Cornette & the Midnights, Paul E., the Steiners, the Birds, Gary Hart, and Terry Funk explains the one thing you never do to a Cowboy!

 NWA Power Hour 8/12/89 (02:37:27)
It’s a special Saturday Night edition of the Power Hour featuring Road Warrior Hawk battling Samu of the SST, and there’s trouble in paradise between the SST and their manager Paul E. Shane Douglas takes on Capt. Mike Rotunda. It’s WNN with Gordon Solie. Terry Funk’s Grill with the Steiner Brothers where Alex meets his little brother “Knuckles”. And “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert battles The Great Muta in a NO DQ Match! See how a solid match ends with a groan-worthy finish. Plus, Missy Hyatt gets the Green Mist for the second time as Muta goes on a spewing spree.

 NWA Main Event 8/13/89 (02:53:12)
We’re told all weekend that there will be no episode of the Main Event this week… only there is.. It’s more of a recap show this week though we do wind up seeing the final match, Match #3, in the Scientific Series between Dr. Death vs. Mike Rotunda, only now it’s somehow morphed from a scientific series in a No Holds Barred match… Yeah, we have no idea either…. Listen as Steve’s head explodes while he tries to compute all of the poor production management over the weekend of the 12th. It’s a fun time trying to make sense of all of this… or at least fun listening as Steve tries to hold it together…

A Teaser For Next Week – Poor Production Continues… (03:01:35)
It’s the NWA at it’s finest… but not really. We take a very brief look at next week’s episode of the Grenade that features two major faux pas on the 6:05 WCW program. First, on 8/19 the wrong tape airs, and the NWA re-airs an episode of WCW from 3 weeks prior! Then on 8/26 the production team forget to press record during the main event match and angles during the taping and have to call an emergency taping to fix the issue. Because WCW.
